IBM i SWMA goes up 12% in 2027. Service Extension multiplies it
On this page
IBM i Software Maintenance goes up 12 percent on January 1, 2027. On its own that is a budget line, not a crisis. The problem is that every IBM i 7.4 shop that bought Service Extension to stay put after September 30 is paying for a contract priced as a multiple of that same SWMA number, which turns a 12 percent IBM i SWMA price increase into something much larger in dollars.
Here is what IBM changed, why you probably did not hear about it from IBM, and the arithmetic your finance team has not done yet.
The IBM i SWMA price increase and what else changed
IBM calls it the 2027 General Price Harmonization. It was announced to business partners on or around August 31, 2026, and takes effect January 1, 2027. Current pricing holds through December 31, 2026. The parts that matter to an IBM i shop:
| Offering | Change from January 1, 2027 |
|---|---|
| IBM i Software Maintenance (SWMA) | +12% |
| Power Systems software | +9% |
| Storage software | +9% |
| Technology Lifecycle Services (hardware maintenance) | +10%, averaging +10% on pre-Power10 systems |
| Power, Storage and IBM Z hardware list prices | Not included |
Sources are IT Jungle’s September 21 report and a September 9 advisory from IBM partner Schneider IT Management. They agree on every percentage.
IBM’s stated reasoning, quoted by IT Jungle from the partner communication, is an “inflation +” approach: the IMF’s 4.7 percent global inflation forecast for the end of 2026, plus currency, supplier costs, tariffs and competition. SWMA sits well above that line, and it did last year too.
IBM never told customers directly
This is the part worth sitting with. IT Jungle reports the increase was communicated to business partners, “not directly to current and potential customers through a regular announcement letter.”
We checked. IBM’s own consolidated IBM Power announcements page, last modified September 22, 2026, lists no 2027 price action. The increase that took effect in January 2025 had a public letter on ibm.com, titled “General Price Harmonization (GPH) for IBM Power/Storage.” This year there is nothing for a customer to find on ibm.com.
The practical consequence: the only document that will show you the number that applies to your machine is a quote from your business partner. If you have not asked for one, nobody is obliged to send it before your renewal lands at the new rate.
The multiplier problem on 7.4 Service Extension
IBM i 7.4 left standard support on September 30. We covered what the 7.4 Service Extension bill looks like year by year: a surcharge of 1.5 times base SWMA in year one, 2 times in year two, 2.5 times in year three, paid on top of base SWMA, which stays a prerequisite.
Read that structure again with a price increase in mind. The surcharge is not a fixed fee. It is a multiple of the thing that just went up 12 percent. So the increase is multiplied too.
Using IBM’s own worked example of $1,000 per core base SWMA:
| Contract | Multiple of base | 2026 price per core | At +12% | Extra per core per year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Base SWMA, supported release | 1x | $1,000 | $1,120 | $120 |
| 7.4 Service Extension, year 1 | 2.5x | $2,500 | $2,800 | $300 |
| 7.4 Service Extension, year 2 | 3x | $3,000 | $3,360 | $360 |
| 7.4 Service Extension, year 3 | 3.5x | $3,500 | $3,920 | $420 |
| 7.3 extended Service Extension | 4x | $4,000 | $4,480 | $480 |
The percentages and multiples are IBM’s. The dollar columns are our arithmetic on IBM’s example. Substitute your real SWMA figure and core count and the shape holds.
Same 12 percent, very different bill. A shop on a supported release pays $120 more per core. A 7.4 shop in year three pays $420 more per core, three and a half times the dollars, on a release IBM has stopped fully supporting. On an eight-core box that is $3,360 a year of increase on the Service Extension path against $960 on base SWMA alone.
Two caveats on timing. Year one of 7.4 Service Extension started October 1, 2026, before the increase. Whether your first year is billed entirely at 2026 rates depends on how your contract and billing periods are written, and we could not confirm a single rule, so ask. And the table assumes no further increase in 2028. IBM raised SWMA 10 percent for 2026 and 12 percent for 2027, so budgeting year three at a flat 2027 rate is optimistic. At another 10 percent, year three is $4,312 per core on the same example.
Two years of compounding
The 2027 increase does not land on 2025 prices. IBM raised IBM i SWMA 10 percent on January 1, 2026, while most IBM offerings went up around 6 percent that year, per Schneider’s 2026 summary.
Stack them: 1.10 times 1.12 is 1.232. Your IBM i SWMA in 2027 is about 23 percent higher than it was in 2025, and IBM i maintenance has now been singled out for a bigger rise than IBM’s general software increase two years running.
If your 2027 budget was built by adding a flat inflation figure to last year’s IT line, it is short.
”Hardware is flat” is half true
The headline everyone is repeating is that Power hardware is not going up. That is accurate for new server list prices under this harmonization, and it is why most coverage of the increase reads as good news for anyone planning a box swap.
Two things undercut it.
Hardware maintenance is going up. Technology Lifecycle Services, the contract that covers the machine you already own, rises about 10 percent, and the average uplift for pre-Power10 systems is 10 percent. If you are running Power8 or Power9 and paying IBM to keep it alive, your hardware bill is not flat.
Hardware prices moved all year anyway. IBM runs a monthly price review on Power, Storage and Z hardware outside the annual harmonization. Through 2026 that produced a doubling of industry-standard DIMM memory prices, 25 to 35 percent on differential DIMMs, and 7 to 53 percent on internal flash for midrange and high-end machines. “Not in the January harmonization” is not the same as “will cost the same in March.”
For a Power8 shop, this sharpens the argument in our piece on why Power8 has no software path past 7.4. Staying put means paying rising TLS on old iron plus a Service Extension surcharge that now grows with SWMA. Moving to a release in standard support removes the surcharge entirely and leaves you paying the 12 percent on 1x instead of 3.5x.
What you can still do before December 31
None of this is exotic. It is a renewal calendar and five questions.
- Pull your SWMA renewal date and term. Not from memory, from the contract. Everything below depends on whether your next coverage period starts before or after January 1.
- Ask for a written 2027 quote now. IBM did not publish the number to customers, so the quote is your only source. Quotes issued before the announcement are honored to their stated expiry; new ones for 2027 carry new prices.
- Ask how the coverage-start rule applies to you. For Passport Advantage software, IBM says the new price applies to coverage periods beginning on or after January 1, 2027 regardless of when you pay. SWMA is sold under different part numbers, so get your partner to state in writing whether the same rule applies to your renewal.
- Ask whether a 3-year term holds the price. IBM sells IBM i SWMA in 1-year and 3-year terms (5733-SPP and 5733-SP3, among others). If a 3-year renewal signed this quarter holds 2026 pricing, that is the single biggest lever available. We could not confirm that it does, so do not assume it.
- Do not let SWMA lapse to save money. Reinstating after a lapse triggers an After License Fee that can run to two years of SWMA. It also closes off Service Extension and free release upgrades.
And the structural option: if you are on 7.4 Service Extension only to keep fixes flowing, active base SWMA already covers downloading post-end-of-service PTFs according to IBM’s own roadmap document. Service Extension buys the right to open a case and report a new defect. If you do not need that, you are paying a multiple of a rising number for something you are not using.
Budget the rest of the stack while you are there. If you moved BRMS to the 5770-BR2 subscription at $400 per core per year, ask on the same quote whether IBM treats it as Power Systems software at 9 percent or as maintenance at 12. None of our sources itemize it.
Bottom line
The 12 percent is survivable for a shop on a supported release with a current contract. It is expensive for a shop that just decided to stay on 7.4 under Service Extension, because that decision was made against 2026 prices and the surcharge scales with every increase that follows. On IBM’s example, the increase alone costs $120 per core a year on a supported release and $300 to $480 per core a year on extended support.
Do three things this quarter: get the 2027 SWMA number in writing from your partner, find out whether your renewal date or a 3-year term keeps you on 2026 pricing, and rerun your 7.4 exit plan with the new numbers. If the reason you are still on 7.4 is that nobody left in the building knows what will break on 7.5, that is a knowledge problem with a cheaper fix than a 3.5x surcharge. Mapping what an old codebase actually does is the job the prompts in the IBM i AI Field Guide are built for.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is the IBM i SWMA price increase for 2027?
12 percent, effective January 1, 2027, as part of IBM’s 2027 General Price Harmonization. Other Power Systems software rises 9 percent. IBM communicated it to business partners rather than in a public announcement letter, so confirm the number on a written quote.
Does the SWMA increase affect IBM i 7.4 Service Extension?
Yes, and by more than 12 percent in dollars. Service Extension is priced as a multiple of base SWMA, so when base SWMA rises the surcharge rises with it. On IBM’s own $1,000 per core example, the increase adds $120 per core for a shop on a supported release and $420 per core in year three of 7.4 Service Extension.
Are IBM Power hardware prices going up in 2027?
New Power server list prices are outside the 2027 harmonization. Hardware maintenance is not: Technology Lifecycle Services maintenance rises about 10 percent, with an average 10 percent uplift for pre-Power10 systems. Memory and flash prices also rose sharply during 2026 through separate monthly price actions.
Can I lock in 2026 SWMA pricing before January 1?
Quotes issued before the announcement are honored to their stated expiry, and purchases closed in 2026 carry 2026 prices. For renewals, IBM’s rule for Passport Advantage software is that the new price applies to coverage periods starting on or after January 1, 2027, regardless of when you pay. Ask your business partner in writing how that rule applies to your SWMA renewal date and whether a 3-year term holds the price.
